Finding Light in the Holiday Season
The holidays are a time of year that can stir up a whirlwind of emotions. For many of us, it’s a mix of joy, gratitude, stress, and sometimes even sadness. While the twinkling lights and festive music can bring cheer, the season also has a way of shining a spotlight on what’s missing—whether it’s loved ones who are no longer with us, the strain of a busy schedule, or the pressure to make everything perfect.
For me, Christmas has always carried a bittersweet note. Most of my immediate family are no longer here, and while it’s been over ten years since my mom passed, her absence feels especially poignant during the holidays. Christmas traditions remind me of her—the way she decorated the tree, her excitement for the season, and the way she made everything feel magical.
Even with those memories, I do my best to create a joyful Christmas for my adult boys and my grandsons. But let’s be honest—there are moments when finding joy feels like a challenge. And I know I’m not alone in this.
Navigating the Holidays
If this season feels heavy for you, I want you to know it doesn’t have to be picture-perfect to be meaningful. The holidays can still hold light and joy, even in the midst of difficult emotions. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way that help me navigate the ups and downs of this time of year:
- Simplify Where You Can
Sometimes, less is truly more. Focus on the things that matter most to you and your family, and let go of the rest. A simpler to-do list often makes room for more meaningful moments. - Create New Traditions
Honoring the past doesn’t mean you can’t embrace the present. Consider starting something new this year—a movie night with your favorite holiday classic, baking cookies with loved ones, or even a relaxing evening by the fire. - Focus on Small Joys
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. The smell of fresh pine, the glow of twinkling lights, or a handwritten card can be powerful reminders of the season’s beauty. - Bring Joy to Others (and Yourself!)
Decorating the tree, stringing lights outside, or even putting up a simple wreath can do wonders for your spirit. There’s something magical about knowing your efforts might bring a smile to someone passing by. - Take Care of Your Heart
This season can bring up a lot of emotions. Give yourself space to feel them all—the joy, the sadness, and everything in between. Journaling, taking a walk, or spending quiet time in prayer can be healing.
Finding Your Light
Every year, I try to remind myself that Christmas isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection, gratitude, and finding light in unexpected places. Whether it’s through a small act of kindness, a cherished memory, or a moment of stillness, the beauty of the season is often found in its simplest forms.
